6 Tips for Busy Dog Owners
As a busy pet parent, life can be so hectic some days that you might not have enough time to really enjoy your furry friend. Fortunately, with a little organization, time management, outside help and lots of toys, you really can make extra time for snuggles. After all, more time having fun with your pet is more time enjoying your life together. Here are six tips to help you spend more quality time with your best friend.
1. Get Organized
Don't waste time looking for your dog’s stuff or — worse yet — tripping over it. Save time by organizing your pet supplies so they're easy to keep track of. Hang leashes on hooks by the front door. Place baskets and cubbies in one area for important pet items like toys, brushes, waste bags, weather-appropriate pet attire and other daily necessities.
2. Prep for Feeding
Gathering your dog’s feeding supplies during mealtimes can be a time suck. Satisfy hungry dogs quickly with a dedicated feeding area in the kitchen or hallway where you can organize everything you need. Keep dry food in storage bins next to dishes and store canned food in a nearby cabinet. Don't forget to place a can opener nearby, too. The feeding area should include a food and water bowl with a mat underneath that can be wiped down or machine washed regularly. Also, keep a small dustpan or hand-held vacuum nearby for quick clean-ups.
3. Cover Up
Scrubbing pet fur and dirt off furniture is a pain. Make cleaning a breeze by covering couches, chairs and dog beds with washable fabric throws. This way, you can easily toss the throws into the washing machine, giving you more time to spend with your furry buddy.
4. Keep a Schedule
Schedule regular walks or play sessions with pups at the same time throughout the day to make them easy to remember. You can even set reminders on your phone for these pet-dedicated appointments, guaranteeing daily quality time with your furry sidekick. These interactions can also help discourage destructive behaviors and accidents — preventing time-consuming clean ups.
5. Have Lots of Toys Around
Occupy your dog during the day so you're not spending your precious bonding time with a hyperactive pooch. Leave some treat balls, regular toys and automated toys around the house for your furry friend to play with. And choose size-appropriate toys that won't be a choking hazard when you can't be there to supervise.
6. Get Help
Bring your pup to doggie daycare or have a pet walker stop by your home. This will give your dog some fun exercise and a much-needed potty break to prevent accidents. Even one or two days a week will give them an attention and exercise boost.
